Things to do in Cetinje

Cetinje was Montenegro's royal capital until the mid-20th century, and it has no coastline: it sits inland, on a plain below Lovćen, reached from Kotor in about an hour via the old road through Njeguši and its 25 hairpin bends.

The town packs in the country's main museums within walking distance of each other, including the National Museum complex, the Blue Palace and King Nikola's Palace, so two to three hours cover the core sights without rushing. It sees far fewer visitors than the coast, with none of the cruise-ship crowds that fill Kotor's old town between 10am and 4pm in season.

Treat it as a half-day cultural detour from Kotor, ideally combined with the Njeguši road and, for those with more time, the Lovćen mausoleum above.
