Things to do at the Njegoš Mausoleum

The mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš sits on Jezerski vrh, 1,657 m up inside Lovćen National Park, roughly 1 h 15 by car from Kotor via the old road through Njeguši.

From the car park, 461 steps climb through a tunnel cut into the rock to the entrance; the interior was carved by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, and a granite figure of Njegoš stands under a canopy held up by two stone eagles.

On a clear day the terrace outside gives a 360-degree view: the Adriatic and the Bay of Kotor to one side, the peaks of Durmitor to the other, with cloud or haze cutting visibility to a few kilometres on many summer afternoons. There is no lift and no shortcut, so allow at least an hour round trip from the car park, more with children or in poor footwear.
