Things to do at Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery is built into a vertical cliff face above the Bjelopavlici plain, roughly two hours' drive from Kotor. It holds the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, and the site draws Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim visitors alike, particularly around the two big pilgrimage dates in May and August.

The lower monastery sits at road level with parking and a church; from there it is about an hour on foot up a steep, partly shaded path to the upper monastery carved into the rock. A paid shuttle runs the same route in high season, sparing you the climb but not the queue at the cave church itself, which can run to 30 minutes or more on pilgrimage weekends.

Wear proper shoes and bring water; there is little shade higher up.
