Things to do in Mostar

Mostar is a long day trip from Kotor: reckon on 2h30 to 3h each way via Trebinje, crossing the Bosnian border, so leave before 7am if you want a reasonable evening back in Kotor. The main draw is the Stari Most, the Ottoman-era bridge built in 1566, destroyed by shelling in 1993 during the war and rebuilt to its original design by 2004.

Local divers gather on the bridge through the day and jump into the Neretva below, but only once they have collected enough euros from onlookers first – nothing happens until the cash is in hand.

The old town around the bridge is compact and can get crowded at midday with coach groups; the crossing itself and the border queue in July and August can add well over an hour each way, so factor that into your departure time.
