Things to do in Zabljak
At around 1,450 m, Zabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and the practical base for Durmitor: this is where you sleep, rent gear and stock up before heading into the park rather than where the scenery itself peaks. The drive from Kotor takes 3 to 3 h 30, mostly on narrow mountain roads, so budget it as a full day either way.
In winter the town runs on its ski lifts, with equipment rental from around 15-20 EUR a day; in summer the same shops switch to hiking boots, tents and rafting transfers to the Tara canyon.
Rooms in family guesthouses start around 25-35 EUR a night in season, and it is worth booking ahead in August and over the winter holidays, when the small centre fills fast.
